Inicialmente el proceso creativo de Usnea comenzó de la recolección de líquenes (nombre cient. Usnea barbata). Un acto de préstamo de la materia, que permite un vínculo con ella, a través de la experimentación y observación fuera de su contexto natural. Así, se utilizó como elemento matriz para su re-materialización en metal (plata), para luego transformarse en objeto portable o joya. De esta manera, su forma responde a la morfología única de este organismo, plasmando su condición germinal de simbiosis entre un hongo y una micro alga verde. Un fenómeno que se desenvuelve únicamente en lugares de aire considerablemente puro, como la Patagonia.

Su valor material y estrecha relación entre el cuerpo y el paisaje, los líquenes fueron utilizados antiguamente  por el pueblo Selknam (habitantes originarios/as de la Isla Tierra del Fuego, extremo sur de la Patagonia); como materia combustible y fibra de tejido para las mantas en las cuales las madres cargaban sus bebés, realzando así el empleo de lo orgánico en lo portable.

Usnea’s creative process began with the collection of lichen (scientific name: Usnea barbata). A act of borrowing the material, which fosters a connection with it through experimentation and observation outside its natural context. Thus, it was used as a matrix for its re-materialisation in metal (silver), to be later made into a wearable object or piece of jewellery. This way, its form responds to the unique morphology of this organism, embodying its germinal condition of symbiosis between a fungus and a green microalga. A phenomenon that develops only in places with exceptionally pure air, such as Patagonia.

Its material value and close relationship between the body and the landscape, lichens were formerly used by the Selknam people (native inhabitants of Tierra del Fuego Island, in the extreme south of Patagonia) as fuel material and fabric fiber for the blankets in which mothers carried their babies, thus enhancing the use of the organic in the portable.
